Doubtlessly, DreamWeaver is the most powerful publisher in the market for design of Web pages. In this article, I expose the steps necessary to add the extension AFP to DreamWeaver, to be able to use it for AFP documents design. I use an English version, so you will have to adapt to Spanish the names of directories and menu options.

First, you must locate the directory 'Configuration' in the directory where DreamWeaver is installed in your PC. In order to modify the necessary archives, use a text editor, external to DreamWeaver. WordPad from Windows can work, or use your prefered one.

  • Locate the Extensions.Txt file and open it.
  • In the first line, you find the extensions that DreamWeaver knows, add AFP in capital letters. Sample: HTML,HTM,SHTM,SHTML,AFP
  • Locate the Active Server Pages line and add AFP:
     ASP,AFP:Active Server Pages
  • Save your file

Under the configuration directory, open the DocumentTypes directory, and with your text editor open the file MMDocuments.XML.

  • Look for the <documenttype id="ASP-VB".. and add in winfileextension and macfileextension, the AFP extension:
    winfileextension='asp,afp'

  • Save your file

If DreamWeaver is running close and open it again and follow the following steps:

  • In Dreamweaver's main menu, click in Edit and select Preferences
  • In the Preferences window, if not selected, select FIle Types / Editors.
  • In the 'Open in Code View' textbox, locate the .afp extension (it should be there), and erase it.
  • Click in OK

Now you can use DreamWeaver, to design your AFP documents. If you want to open an AFP Document, in Dreamweaver's main menu, select File, Open, All Files. Locate an .AFP document and you are ready to go!!. You will have all the power of DreamWeaver to build AFP documents with great look, and all its additional functionality.

Enjoy, Jorge Pérez
