Since latest news item much has changed all over this web site. Some features are still
experimental but already quite stable and useable. Let's try to summarize those changes:
- Polished presentation
- Using cookies for your language and theme settings
- Enhanced RSS feed - now with logo and search interface
- Enhanced articles - still experimental
- Integration of FAQuarium
- FIX: Count of current 'Users online'
- More articles...
In first sight seems to be a lot of changes...
Polished presentation
Obviously our navigation bar on the left side has a touch of brushed aluminium. The
different sections - poll, navigation and search - were lowered into the metal. Guess
that this looks way more professional, doesn't it?
Using cookies for your language and theme settings
Due to some user feedback we expanded storage of your prefered settings - language and
theme - to use cookies. Now, if you are re-visiting this web site, the provides your
personal settings at the very first page although your session might be expired. We are
going to write an article about this feature - but that might pend a bit.
Enhanced RSS feed - now with logo and search interface
After studying the standards and drafts of RDF Site Summary (RSS) technology we changed
functionality and content of our RSS feed to provide additional information like our
(still missing) logo and an interface to search the AFP FAQ for your RSS desktop readers.
We tested those changes under Linux with an application called 'liferea'. If you know
any Windows client which is capable to handle these enhancements, please drop us a mail.
At the moment, Miranda IM's RSS plugin or RSS Newsticker deal with RSS items only and
ignore those 'enhanced' features completely. What a pity...
Enhanced articles - still experimental
During last weeks we changed the interface of FAQ articles a little bit. At the top of
each there is new bar visible. This bar provides (and will provide in the near future)
some nice gimmicks like printing - stylesheets for printing are in progress - or sending
as suggestion via mail and more.
Currently we are working on a solution to provide an article in other formats than HTML.
First results can be opened with word processor like Microsoft Winword or OpenOffice.org.
But these features are still 'experimental' - so usage is on your own risk.
With Microsoft Internet Explorer you can bookmark any article if you like to. Other browser
doesn't offer any programmtic way (known to us) to add new bookmarks.
Okay, but there are more links - 'Rating' and 'Discussion'. What the hell...?
Here, we are trying to provide an interface to you to rate an article (based on points) and
try to offer an incentive to discuss an article in our new forum. These features are as
well tagged with 'very experimental'. But we hope you got an idea of our plans.
Integration of FAQuarium
As just mentioned we have an online forum - the FAQuarium. Unfortunately not realized with
Active FoxPro Pages - at the moment - but we are working on this primarily .o ( If
leisure time could be called work... ).
The FAQuqrium is currently based on a PHP solution with open sources, hopefully we will
complete our conversion during next weeks / months and...
...will provide this AFP-based forum as well as open source to you. The first version
should already be capable to handle nearly all features - templates, languages,
administrative section and multiple databases. At the moment we are working on the
template engine.
FIX: Count of current 'Users online'
After some wondering if there are really as many users as shown online at the same time,
we checked our algorithm again and changed it a bit. Now, we are using UnixTime() - an UDF
due to our work on the forum - instead of Seconds() as time indicator.
More articles...
Wow, that's an interesting aspect. There are many ideas and suggestions but each day
has too little hours to write those. Hey, but there are some new and/or changed articles.
And again, that's all for now. Let's hope that time before christmas offers some
goodies...
Enjoy the AFP FAQ, JoKi
