Using Microsoft FrontPage with AFP Jorge Pérez

Some aspects about FrontPage's installation and configuration:

In order to use FrontPage with your AFP documents, the directory must have installed the FrontPage extensions. There are two available methods to install theme:

1 - Create the new directory from FrontPage:

For this, in FrontPage's menu select File > New page or web > Empty web Site > Empty web. Complete the information of the new directory in the location window:

http://localhost/NewDirectory

Click in Ok. Using this procedure, FrontPage will create the new directory and will install FrontPage extensions on it

2 - The directory exists, you created from Windows Explorer:

When you create a new folder in the server, FrontPage extensions are not installed by default, so FrontPage won't work in these directories. To install FrontPage's extensions for folders created with this procedure, follow the next steps:

  • Open IIS.
  • Right click the folder where you want to install the extensions.
  • Select All Tasks > Configure server extensions.
  • Click next (3 times), accept the default values in each window.
  • Click in Ok

Once you finish, return to FrontPage and from the menu select:

  • File
  • Open web (unfold the menu)
  • Type the name of your directory - http://localhost/NewDirectory

Now you will be able to open and/or create AFP documents just like you do with HTML documents. To open an AFP document, right click any AFP document in the folder:

  • Select: Open with
  • Select: FrontPage.Exe

Creating a new document:

  • Select the Folder View.
  • Click in the New Page button, this will create a new document with an .HTM extension by default.
  • Change the name of the file to the one you are going to use for your document and the extension to .AFP

In FrontPage XP, the first time you open an AFP document, FrontPage will ask for the installation of additional software.  Insert your installation CD and wait until Windows finishes configuring FrontPage. In some cases the process is delayed and gives the appearance that the same software is being reinstalled many times, that's normal, let the process end.

That's all you have to do, Enjoy,

Jorge Pérez
